Youngsters who fancy having a game of football, cricket, rounders or pool can get down to one of four Canterbury community centres.

The centres have joined forces over the school summer holidays to put on a range of activities.

Called 4 For Fun, it is a joint initiative between the Warwick Road Activity Centre, Querns Road Community Centre, Spring Lane Community Centre and the AWS run community facilities at Howe Barracks.

Each centre will have a team of about 20 children participating in competitions which will be held on the Howe Barracks recreation ground.

The first will be a football tournament on Monday and Tuesday this week followed by cricket matches on Monday, August 4, and Tuesday, August 5.

A rounders match will be held on Monday, August 11, and Tuesday, August12, while a knockout pool challenge will be staged at the individual centres with the finals on Tuesday, August 12.

The activities are being supported by the city council sports and community development department and Canterbury police.

Sports coaches will also be giving training sessions and support to the teams.

The programme culminates with a free family fun day at Howe Barracks on Saturday, August 16, when visitors will have the chance to tackle a huge, inflatable, It’s a Knock-Out type obstacle course.

There will also be other activities and attractions and the winning teams will be presented with their trophies.
