City held by strugglers

Canterbury City were a minute from victory at Bridge on Saturday but had the win snatched away by lowly Oakwood, who deserved their share of the spoils.

Two more goals for the Kent County League’s Division 1 East’s top scorer, Royston Gough, were not enough to put City beyond the reach of Oakwood’s effective, fast counter-attacking game.

At 2-1 ahead, City ought to have increased the pressure but Oakwood’s solid midfield and the pace of their front men meant Canterbury were unable to make their superior football count.

City took the lead on the half hour mark when a corner dropped into the penalty area and Gough scooped in the loose ball.

Allowing Oakwood’s attackers too much space cost City their advantage when a fine move was finished with a powerful header from Alex Stephens.

City brought on Adam Woollcott and new signing Alex Hossick, who added imagination and strength respectively, and when Gough pushed in City’s second after a well-worked move, it seemed further goals would come.

Woollcott did hit the bar, but a wastefully given free-kick saw Oakwood equalise when, in the 89th minute, Matt Broadway was not marked at the far post and comfortably headed in.
