Get active while watching Olympics in Dover

Olympic-themed events will be taking place in Dover’s Market Square this Saturday when people can watch all the latest action from the London 2012 Games on the Big Screen and keep fit.

Spectators will be able to have their photos taken with an Olympic torch, and help a local sports club at the same time.

Saturday promises to be the most glittering and exciting day of the games with athletes competing for 25 gold medals and a range of activities and performances will be organised from 11am to 4pm to keep everyone entertained and encourage them to get active.

People can relax on large brightly-coloured beanbags as they get behind Team GB and watch the live coverage throughout the day. There will also be a junior and adult games zone in the Roman Garden just off the Market Square and an under fives’ play zone complete with a bouncy castle.

The event is being hosted by the district council and Vista Leisure with other voluntary groups and clubs promoting sport and showcasing the latest opportunities of what to do and where to go to get active and feel alive.

One such club is the Dover Gymnastics Club, which is gearing up for increased interest following the excitement of the men’s gymnastics team winning a bronze medal this week.

The club’s public relations officer Jon Green, who ran in the Olympic Torch relay two weeks ago, will be at the event from noon until 2pm inviting people to bring their own cameras and pay £1 to have their picture with the torch, the proceeds of which will go to the gym club funds.

The district council’s sport and leisure officer Sarah Philpott said: “Having the Olympic and Paralympic Games on home soil I hope will prove to be inspirational for people of all ages and abilities.

“The council’s website has lots of information about local clubs and activities available.”
