Gillingham's Adebayo Akinfenwa is eyeing League 2 promotion following his move from Northampton Town to Priestfield

Adebayo Akinfenwa attracted interest from many clubs in League 2 and beyond but it was Gillingham’s ambition that won the big striker over.

Gillingham became the striker’s 10th club in eight years and he’s hungry to help deliver promotion back to League 1.

Akinfenwa (pictured) said: "The gaffer told me his plan and his ultimate goal which is to get automatic promotion.

"The ambition and the hunger in the gaffer matches my own and I want to get promoted with Gillingham Football Club.

"I want to show and repay the faith that was given to me this season by coming here.

"Most of League 2 wanted me. I had a productive season last year at Northampton in this league. After talking to the gaffer, the chairman and my family I felt this was the right place for me to be."

Akinfenwa comes with a good reputation, having netted 17 goals for Northampton in League 2 last season.

"Hopefully by the grace of god I can do the same again this season," he said.

"It was good for me but I do believe it’s about the team. My aim last season with the team I was at was to get promoted but that didn’t happen. I would take promotion over scoring 17 goals this season.

"The plan is the same here. Myself, the gaffer and chairman and every one of these players has the same ambition which is to get promoted and back up to League 1 because I do believe this is not a League 2 club.

"Hopefully we can reach our aims this season and we can get back up to League 1."

Akinfenwa's latest appearance for the Gills was on Tuesday night at Faversham, where he played 70 minutes. The big striker was frustrated by home keeper Rob French, after he saved Akinfenwa's second half penalty.

The striker will now be involved on Saturday when Gillingham kick-off their League 2 season against Cheltenham.
