Two Dutch men have been jailed for a trying to smuggle crystal meth into the UK.

Leonardus Hover, 57, from Eindhoven, and 45-year-old Madani Kaniz, from Westerhoven, were sentenced to 11 years each.

Canterbury Crown Court heard they were stopped by border officials at the entrance to the Channel Tunnel in France.

Three kilos of the drug was found stuffed into their car seats. The contents of the packages tested positive for crystal meth, with an estimated street value of £30,000.

When questioned, Hover said the car they were using was hired and they were going to visit Kaniz’s friend in Birmingham and would return to Holland later that same day.

The UK Border Agency's assistant director of criminal and financial investigations Malcolm Bragg said: "The UK Border Agency is alert to the various ways in which attempts are made to smuggle drugs into the UK and our investigators will not hesitate to pursue those who commit smuggling offences to ensure they are brought to justice.

"The sentence handed down today will act as a deterrent to those contemplating this form of criminality and I would encourage anyone with information that may be linked to drug smuggling to call our hotline on 0800 59 5000."
