A BARGE that broke free of its moorings has been lifted from the bed of the River Medway.

Workmen spent hours preparing to lift the 40ft wreck after it drifted towards the sea, eventually sinking just opposite the Medway City Estate at Strood.

Medway Ports Authority authorised the lifting of the wreck to prevent it interfering with river traffic.
