Olympian's hopes hit

Ashley Jackson went close to a breakthrough for GB
Ashley Jackson went close to a breakthrough for GB

Ashley Jackson’s dream of an Olympic medal took a hit after a heartbreaking late defeat to European Champions Holland in Beijing on Wednesday afternoon.

The 20-year-old from Kings Hill, West Malling, was one of Great Britain’s dangermen in sweltering conditions at the Olympic Green stadium but it was the Netherlands who scored the only goal seven minutes from time with a short corner strike from Taeke Taekema.

Only the top two sides from each pool will reach the semi-finals and with reigning Olympic champions Australia still to play, Britain look to have their work cut out.

Jackson’s next game will be against South Africa - who lost 10-0 to Australia today - at 2pm BST on Friday.
