JAMES TREDWELL admitted his call-up to England’s 16-man one-day international squad to tour New Zealand later this month came as a pleasant shock

The 24-year-old off-spinner from Ashford was the surprise selection in the England tour party named last Friday, while his club colleague, Joe Denly, 23, from Whitstable, won a call up to England Lions’ five-week tour of India leaving in late January – the trip Tredwell himself expected to be making.

Tredwell said: "I’d had a letter from the ECB and it seemed pretty much certain I’d be going to India with the Lions, so when David Graveney (ECB chairman of selectors) rang me, I thought it was just to go through the admin for that trip.

"But when he told me I was going to New Zealand instead, it came as a little bit of a shock but a nice one all the same.

"I’ve been involved with the ECB performance squads and the A teams for some time now so I’d like to think I’ve been doing things right for them and for Kent in order to get this call."
