Strood High Street will be open as roadworks finish early

After weeks of traffic and diversion misery, the end is nearer than expected for a roadworks project.

From May 10, Strood High Street was supposed to be shut for 10 weekends from Fridays at 8.30pm to Mondays at 5am.

The closures were in place while Medway Council contracted builders replaced the current road paving blocks with asphalt.

However, the works are due to finish early but there will be two smaller closures in connection to the Strood town centre project.

Portfolio holder for frontline services, Cllr Phil Filmer (Con), said: “We are pleased we have been able to reduce the number of weekend closures in Strood as part of the works.

“This is testament to the hard work of our contractor and we would like to thank businesses and motorists for their patience.

“This is a very exciting time for Strood and I look forward to the completion of the project later this year.”

The first weekend saw drivers using the diverted routes get stuck in jams tailing back to the Esplanade in Rochester.

The next scheduled closure in Strood will be from 6am on Sunday until 5am on Monday.

Gun Lane to Station Road will be closed, with no vehicle access to the High Street.

People should be aware that this closure will impact bus services around the towns.

Users of the 133, 140/141, 190, 191 and 700 should be mindful that the buses will be diverted around Strood town centre.

Station Road will be closed in all directions, from Friday, July 26, to Monday, July 29, evenings only, from 8pm to 5.30am each night. This means there will be no vehicle access to the High Street and bridge.

The council says the contractor will try and carry out as much work as possible during the closures to minimise disruption. Businesses will open as usual.
