Snow keeps parties overnight

More than 1000 people have been trapped overnight at the Kent Showground on Detling Hill, because of the snow.

The weather forced partygoers to stay at the venue after celebrating Christmas at the site in Detling, near Maidstone.

The snow closed Detling Hill so they couldn’t get out after the event.

One part of workers said to be stuck at the venue were from the Specsavers store in Gillingham High Street

People trying to commute to London are facing delays with rail services and a spokesman for the company said trains were on average running 20 minutes late.

Some services did see cancellations, including the Medway Valley Line between Strood and Maidstone early this morning.

Motorists and lorry drivers travelling along the M2 have come to a standstill.

The coastbound carriageway is blocked because of the snow and a jack-knifed lorry at junction three (Chatham) and congestion is backing up all the way along the motorway bridge back to junction two at Strood.

Arriva cancelled all its bus services in Medway and Swale due to the weather conditions but main routes were restored later in the day.

Glen Shuttleworth, manager at the Arriva Gillingham depot, said: “We have no vehicles out at the moment.

“We will of course review this later, but a lot of our routes are blocked by other vehicles which have got stuck on roads overnight.”
