Woodlands Nursery on Sheppey 'back where it belongs' after Ofsted rates it 'good'

A children's nursery says it is back where it belongs after receiving a "good" report from Ofsted.

Kevin Ives, office manager at Woodlands Nursery in Minster Road, Minster, Sheppey, said: "It is strongly believed that in our previous inspection in October 2019 we were judged in an unfair manner.

"Within a month of this happening, we had another short welfare visit from Ofsted who signed us off there and then.

"Due to Covid-19 we have had to wait a considerable time before our next inspection which finally took place on November 4."

In 2020 the nursery and preschool was judged "inadequate" but the latest inspection has rated it "good".

Mr Ives said: "We feel this is much more of a true reflection of us."

Inspector Liz Caluori said: "Children have a wonderful time as they play and learn in the stimulating, well organised environment.

"Those in the under-twos' room confidently explore and discover, returning regularly for a reassuring cuddle from their trusted staff. Older children become engrossed in their play."

The inspector said youngsters gained a "wealth of skills" as they created unique artwork, practised reading or worked together with construction materials.

She added: "The unhurried routines allow children a lot of time to follow their interests.”

The report says the 18-strong staff are all hard-working, knowledgeable and positive role models led by “a strong and inspiring management” resulting in all children’s needs and learning being met effectively.

Mr Ives added: "We are all extremely pleased and proud of this outcome that we feel is truly deserved.

"We would like to thank all our parents, past and present, who have continued supporting us throughout.

"As a result, we only have very limited spaces available."

The nursery was founded in 2010 by Sarah Ives and Andrea Yates. It is registered for 38 places and has 85 children from five weeks to five years on its roll.

Staff say they are introducing Hygge, the Danish word for coziness and comfortable contentment, to their Early Years Accreditation to produce a more harmonic, calmer atmosphere.

Initiatives can include cosy corners, mood lighting and fresh flowers.
