A spokesman for Sheerness Town Council said: “On a recent visit to the newly restored planters in Marine Town we were saddened to see many of the plants have been removed.

“Reports from residents lead us to believe that some were taken and discarded in an act of mindless vandalism as well as others that were stolen.”

The discovery was made last Wednesday, just a few weeks after the flowers had been planted.

The council added: “Although this is disappointing, please be assured that we will continue with our efforts to improve the area. The few will not spoil it for the many.

“We would like to thank the community for their assistance in trying to protect this asset, with some residents even replacing the missing plants.

“We shall also be adding to the display with some new plants and bulbs, and really hope that everyone will be able to enjoy them.”

Residents from the Island have shared their upset following the vandalism.

One person said: “Why just why!!?? Tired of the selfishness of sad people.”

Another added: “Why do a few small-minded people like to spoil things for the majority!!!

“Thank you for your efforts Sheerness Town Council in trying to brighten Sheerness up. The majority of people appreciate it!!!”

A spokesman for Sheerness Town Council said: “The eight planters in Marine Town were renovated in March, as they had been neglected and overgrown for many years. The existing weeds and rubbish were cleared and then replanted with bulbs and perennials.

“We have had several of the plants stolen or vandalised which is of course disappointing but we are determined to make this project work and improve the area for residents. The culprits have not been caught.

“We have had overwhelming support from the community as a whole, and the residents of Marine Town have been vital to making this work. The members from East Kent Mencap have also been helping us to maintain them by visiting weekly and clearing any weeds and rubbish which we are so grateful for.

“We shall be replacing the plants that have been removed and Total Landscaping who did the planting has also kindly offered to supply any stock they have left over if needed. If successful we hope to extend this project into other areas and renovate more planters in Sheerness.”
