Bomb scare in Bellevue Road, Whitstable near The Whitstable School after grenade found

Bomb disposal experts were called in after a grenade was found near a school in Whitstable.

The device, which is believed to be a wartime grenade, was unearthed this morning near The Whitstable School in Bellevue Road.

The road was closed off by police after the discovery was made, reportedly by gas workers.

Pupils were said to have been told to remain in the school while specialist teams worked to make the scene safe.

Officers were called to the scene just after 10am and were joined by a specialist bomb disposal unit.

A police spokesperson said: "Kent Police was called to Bellevue Road, Whitstable at 10.05am on Thursday 23 February 2023 after a suspected wartime grenade was found.

"Officers attended along with a Ministry of Defence bomb disposal team, who removed the device."

The Whitstable School and the Ministry of Defence have been contacted for comment.
